Places to go, People to see, Things to eat…
by Ryan on Oct.22, 2007, under America, Food, Funny, Vancouver, Canada
So our home sickedness continues. We are most likely (~85% chance) coming home for Christmas break. This is good but it makes me only plan and thus miss things more.
So as the heading of my post implies… things to go to and eat while home:
1. Pizza – They serve the equivalent of Elio’s in restaurants here.
2. Cheesecake Factory – Please Please tell me I didn’t miss the Pumpkin Cheesecake!!
3. Coldstone Creamery – Please Please tell me I didn’t miss the Pumpkin Icecream!!
4. Diner – I miss you so much Cheeseburger Deluxe.
5. Museums / Art Gallery – Seeing photos with new eyes… the only one here is like a wing of one back home.
6. Rice to Riches – Nuff said.
7. Gray’s Papaya – Oh hot dogs… let’s never fight again…
8. Home – See everyone… AND eat real Filipino food.
9. Poonam’s House – Real Falalalalafals.
10. McDonald’s Breakfast – WHY OH WHY ARE THERE NO BISCUITS ANYWHERE?!??!?
As they say here… eh… for sure…. no doubt!!!
Still some more…

Photography has been pretty rewarding thus far. Sometimes I walk out though and have a hard time finding things I want to shoot. But I think that mostly comes from being a little nervous asking people, “Do you mind if I take your picture?” I don’t have any pictures of people yet. However, we are going into the studio soon. Hopefully that can break me of my habits and help me to produce some good pictures of humans. Anyway, here’s some more lifeless photography for all of you.
I miss money. I miss buying things. I miss hanging out. I miss all of you.
Week 4 of Class…
by Ryan on Sep.25, 2007, under Photos, Ryan, Vancouver, Canada
Yes Yes… I know… We haven’t been updating as much as we should. I apologize up front… but to defend we have been busy. School has started and I have level to 70 before the new expansion of Warcraft comes out… O_o
But now for the story…
School is amazing. It’s week 4 and we’re running through fundamentals. It’s kind of a catch everyone up to speed thing. We’re covering camera operation, techniques, history, photoshop, and theory. Very interesting. It’s like regular school only all the classes are about photography.
I have to say that coming to this school was an awesome choice. Not to sound like an advertisement for school but… the teachers are all working professional and successful photographers in very different fields. My core teachers are:
Marc Koegel – Marc not only produces some fine images but is also active in the Vancouver photography scene. He runs Vancouver Photo Workshops which brings in amazing photographers for talks and runs workshops for people of varying skill level.
Aura McKay – Aura runs 3 companies and was previously a successful corporate accountant before abandoning that life for photography. Great energy and amazing photography.
Syx Langmann- Syx has a bacherlors in fine arts and does amazing commercial and great personal work. He just got back from his show with The Great Orbax featuring the Lizardman… Awesome… awesome… awesome…
Beyond them I am learning from Grant, Ken Nash, Mary Jensen and a slew of other masters of their craft.
I was really psyched cause as I got to go to see a Ralph Gibson talk. Really inspiring work from a man who rarely does commercial work and is amazingly successful from his fine art work.
So yeah… I’m psyched and we’ve been out taking photos and making images and working on them on our nifty new Macs and all… We’ve gone on several shooting trips and museum trips and had a pot luck dinner…
But I do miss work… and money… and hanging out with everyone back home. Even my family and all. A bit of home sickness mixed in with all of the new and exciting stuff. Meh.. Anyway… I’ll try to update more.
Keep on keepin on…
